I often get asked, by both interested clients and fellow photographers, how I go about planning the setups I use in a newborn session. The honest truth is, very little in depth advanced planning occurs! I am what I refer to as a "visual creative". I need to and prefer to be in the studio, looking at my props, browsing through my backdrops, handeling textured layers, while I visualize setups in my head and then put them together in front of me.
I do send all families a client form that I request they fill out in advance, and this form has numerous questions that help draw out what they would love to see in their session. Using this as a guide, I combine both their desires and my creativity to come up with the perfect custom sets. This, however, is only possible because I have spent the last 12 years amassing a prop and fabric supply that ensures at least 90% of the time, I will have what is necessary to bring my vision to life. There are sometimes where I will have to purchase items in advance to complete a set, but it is a welcome investment that will pay itself back in the future when I can use it again.
Just a little bit of insight into my process.....
